Tree Cavities

Tree cavities represent ‘keystone vegetation structures’ (Tews et al., 2004), which are well documented to limit the populations of many terrestrial animals at the local scale (Newton, 1998).

In a way it is sad that we need to make log hives. Research shows that tree cavities are important indicators of our forests structure and health. So when it gets to the point that we need to create cavities for our fauna, it states how bad things really are. When visiting Australia i was amazed with the amount of cavities available. Walking through forests over there it was easy to spot several cavities within a short distance. Back home in Ireland cavities in trees are very scarce.

What does it mean? In my eye it means we need to address the way we look after our landscape and trees. We need to find a way where both human and nature can thrive. Maybe reduce our needs… the constant demand from us to use everything that keeps nature alive. The longer we abuse nature the less we will have in the future.

Mistakes have been made over many centuries, and we need to address these. For this reason the temporary solution of erecting log hives is essential but it is not the long term solution. It will help with establishing sustainable populations. So if you have the space erect a log hive, why not help out?
