Observing the Natural Situation

During the first couple of months of the year the creation of many natural hives (log hives) in well under way. The logs we have gathered during the 2021 are turning in to potential nesting sites for our wild honey bees. As we know there is a lack of natural nesting habitat for honeybees due to the fact that a lot of the suitable trees have been felled. As the land use changes with the time we have to change to.

We at Boomtreebees constantly look at the natural situation trying to understand what is is about these natural cavities that influences the health of the wild honeybee colonies so much. What factors play a role?

When ever we get the chance to inspect a tree cavity we would look at the width of the cavity, height, wall structure and thickness, presence of fungi, location of the cavity etc. etc. so we can constantly re evaluate our  hive design. Every time we see a cavity in a tree it is unique, it is a one off. And we try to create this uniqueness when we make the log hives.
