What logs do we use for making our hives?
Ideally naturally hollow logs are the best to use. But these are not always to hand
We at Boomtreebees ltd only seek to use those logs that came from trees that died of natural causes, i.e. windblown, disease etc. Taking down healthy trees doesn’t make any sense in our eyes. It completely conflicts with our ideology of conservation. We are trying to improve our landscape and biodiversity so why would you cut down a tree and turn it into log hives?
So we can’t be picky. We use a whole range of different species of trees, from oak, beech to pines and firs. As long as the log hive has a good sized cavity, thick walls and is protected from the elements so no water can get in, even softwoods can last a few decades.
